Mandela has just died. Quite a life to have led (and a long one, at that), but it's still sad. Here, he is pictured ignoring a Smart car. We have lost a very incredible person, and while almost inevitable, it still comes as a shock due to his immortalization.

I fear that it will be a very, very long time before the world sees another individual of his caliber.
If anyone here is not entirely familiar with what Nelson Mandela did and the resonating effects of his courage and actions, then I encourage you to do some reading. Come through it all, and you will find yourself just a little more enlightened.

There is no other way to read the news of his passing than in Morgan Freeman's voice. RIP, a truly great man

It's not like it is a surprise, he has been of poor health for quite some time now. But still!
Shit, I still remember the "Free Mandela" concerts. Top notch artists playing a tribute to a political prisoner. And then he got released, became the President of a country that pretty much was at war with itself. Managed to quench at least the worst of the hatred and led them onto a new future.
Godspeed Madiba! You made this world a better place (and suffered for it)!

Agreed; it's just that when someone is so well-known and appreciated, you assume they will always be there. It was not a surprise at all. I did not see those concerts, but it's pretty cool that they happened—he made a huge difference upon being released. It must have been really cool to see those concerts.

Yep! He was the one good person! A beacon of honesty and faith in humankind!
I was just going to bed, but I will now have to re-do my history lesson for my 10th graders tomorrow.
Can someone just get the onions out of the way?
